Resilience isn’t just a human virtue, but rather an inherent trait of nature.
A few years ago, I was hiking in the Costa Brava, Spain. As I paused to admire the rocks being hit by the angry waves of the sea, I noticed a striking contrast. The rocks closer to the shore were soft and smooth, while those further away were messy and chaotic. This observation sparked a thought in my mind: being rough doesn’t necessarily equate to strength and resilience.
This thought lingered in my mind, and a few weeks ago, an inspirational poem, as part of the mirror poems initiative by Wildwood Writer and Kelly Trost , sparked this poem.
The Wild Coast
My soul is a torch I bear,
while I hike the wild coast at night.
The sea wind moves intensely,
the light of my candle flickering,
trying to survive the storm,
But can it?
I used to come take refuge.
The rocks that had my back
and the sea that kept open my eyes
no matter what had passed
In my life, I felt safe among them.
I squint at the rocks there, aligning
They are not still, not all the same.
The ones by the sea are soft,
luminous and beautiful.
The distant ones are rough,
disheveled and disorganized.
At first, you’d think
the smooth ones are gentle,
that they’ve had a soft life.
But the fact is;
they are the ones
who faced the angry waves,
kicking them, showing no mercy.
While the far-off ones, the tough,
were cowering behind,
barely getting splashes of water.
This made me wonder,
made me realize the truth of nature.
The harsher you’re hit,
the stronger, you’ll be resilient.
The sea won’t be gentle to me,
won't show me mercy.
If she truly cares,
she won’t be kind,
raising me the hard way.
Every inflamed wound I carry,
maintains my torch aflame.
Every wide scar that marks me,
carves the pathway to be me.
Every fall, every loss and defeat,
all form the compass
towards my eternal destiny,
amidst the wild coast of life.

The rough edges of youth
cut their way through life
clumsy and unsure
Battered by the waves
the body we shape is
smoothed and we endure
Forged, in adversity,
all we touch, all we love
fans the embers of the soul
We become the flame
We light the way
for those who follow
Damn brother... I'll never look at coastal rocks the same way again ❤️🙏 loved it
